‘Going Through A Bad Patch’ EP

‘Going Through A Bad Patch’ is the new 4 track EP by Leeds musician The Legendary Len Liggins.

The songs tackle mental health issues experienced by a lot of people living through these depressing times: low mood (the title track), lack of self-esteem (‘Skin – The Disappointment Song’) and the importance of not bottling up emotions (‘Psychos’).

In addition to these three new Len compositions, the EP also features him playing some extremely angsty distorted electric guitar in his unique version of Born Under A Bad Sign, the classic song recorded by American blues singer and guitarist ALBERT KING in 1967.

All voices and instruments by Len, which include his shiny new red five-string bass guitar and a Korg synthesiser which he downloaded off the internet for nothing.

Tracklist: 1) Going Through A Bad Patch, 2) Skin – The Disappointment Song, 3) Psychos, 4) Born Under A Bad Sign

‘Paint It Yellow’ EP

Recorded at home during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020.

This EP features the eponymous ‘Paint It Yellow’, a track about a man whose partner is jealous that he lavishes more attention on his car than on them, and ‘Psychedelic Carol’, a tale about an ageing hippy with a fondness for drugs and sweets. On a more serious note, ‘Dusk on the Osa Peninsula’ describes the pioneering spirit of the small central American country of Costa Rica, which is on track to become one of the first carbon-neutral counties in the world, but whose ecosystem is still affected by the global warming activities of the rest of the world. Finally, ‘I Wish I Wish (Love Is Pleasing)’ is a traditional Irish folk song Len remembers fondly from the summers he stayed with his relatives in Ireland as a child.

The first 100 copies are individually numbered.

Reviews

‘There are some great singalongs and shoutalongs here, and more than a hint at the sort of stuff John Peel loved to play – wilfully unclassifiable and determinedly independent’. **** RnR

‘Bard of the banal, finding poetry in the ordinary, like Alan Bennett with a six-string’ CLASSIC ROCK

‘Off-kilter intelligent buzzsaw guitars take their place alongside dance sojourns and a number of other beautifully ramshackle musical backdrops. And the juicy cherries on top are the lyrics in finest English observational tradition – insightful, caustic, and occasionally decidedly batty.’ GUITAR

‘Eccentric and enjoyable’ MOJO

‘1982-1985’ vinyl LP

Reviews

It’s Len’s entertaining former life as a producer of bedroom electronica which is on offer here. Unlike many of his equally isolated contemporaries in the first half of the 1980s, Liggins’ minimal wave synth output is literate and humerous. The squonky synth backing, created with a borrowed WASP, an SB-88 SoundMaster drum machine, a Woolworth’s guitar and a Portastudio act as a framework for his lyrics, which are delivered with a wry committment.

‘1982-1985’ is a fine document of an era that revolved around cassette labels, fanzines, cheap synths and unemployment. Essential. ELECTRONIC SOUND
